Oh! For The Passion . . .

Carol's Photos

Carol's Photos

Carol Cohen, one of our showcased sites’ winners, believes you should do things you are passionate about, things that get your creative juices flowing.   For Carol, that passion is photography.  As a young child Carol collected postcards and was extremely fascinated with landscaping pictures.  Although Carol is a professional, she enjoys photography as a hobby with friends, especially now that her children are grown.  She day trips and travels to capture nature’s beauty at its best.

With Photoshop and Lightroom available, more and more photographers are literally staying out of the darkroom, and the same is true for Carol.  Intrigued, I asked Carol if there were any other special software, social media, or techie things she was particularly interested in.  Her response, “Twitter and Facebook.”  Carol tried Twitter at the urging of her daughter, to help Ashton Kutcher be the first to reach one million followers.  “Once I saw how this social media worked,” Carol said, ” I thought it was a great way to see what my grown children are doing throughout the day. How cool is that?’

You’ve already seen Carol’s old site; now you can see her new site (using her winning Business Plus plan on IX Web Hosting). Carol, we thank you for sharing your passion.

“If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived? Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it, and let it become you and you will find great things happen FOR you, TO you and BECAUSE of you.”

Our Last Winners!

Our Last Winners!

Finally! We are at the end of our Twitter Contest!

As the saying goes “When there’s a start, there will always be an ending“. Where did we get that quote, you ask? Well, we kind of made it ourselves… But hey, at least we have one, right?

Anyway, it was really fun doing the contest. We saw a lot of twitter responses from all over the world. It was awesome to meet so many new people who helped us save so many sites from the perils of free hosting.

We’d like to thank all of you who participated in the contest.

And so we’ve strapped on our diving masks (along with the Bat Bucket) for one last dive. All twitter handles were in, and the lucky 2 winners rescued are:

The first winner drawn is @danrako.
And the final winner is @bludesign4.

Both will be able to buy a year of hosting (provided by IX Web Hosting) for $1.00. Congratulations!

Thanks again to everyone!

P.S If you didn’t win stay tuned. We are headed back to Free Hosting Rescue’s command center to come up with a way to thank you all for participating. Check back after the 4th!

Didn’t Get the Username You Wanted on Facebook?

Facebook Logo

Facebook

Facebook has reached 6 Million custom usernames. Was yours taken when you arrived?

In case you missed it, Facebook opened up to custom usernames. That announcement created an Oklahoma Landrush type of event as everyone logged in to grab their handle.

Were you able to snag the username that you want? No? Well, unless your name is something unique (like “Banjo” or “Kazooey“), you’re out of luck. According to Mashable, there were 200,000 usernames gobbled up in the first 3 minutes, and more than twice that after 15 minutes of its debut. No surprise there, considering the user base of Facebook (175 Million users as of February 2009).

So what does it mean to have missed acquiring  the username you’ve always wanted in Facebook?  Will people be unable to find you on Facebook? Of course not. Hey, it’s just a name… and since it’s attached to Facebook.com, it’s not really yours.

Facebook is another free service on the internet, and we love free just as much as the next person. Facebook is a great social media application. All we’re saying is, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Remember Geocities. MySpace’s numbers continue to dwindle. We know the value of ownership. After all, bailing out websites that have lost their free hosting is our reason for being.

Facebook Usernames

Facebook Usernames

In addition to having your custom username on Facebook, why not have your own domain name? Web hosting companies now offer free domains with their very affordable hosting packages.

When you register your own domain name remember Facebook is currently one of the most (if not the most) popular social networking website on the internet. You can use it to increase the visitors to your own website. Exercise your creativity with the freedom ownership provides!

Third time’s the charm – Our Third Winners…

winners announcement

Batman announcing the winners

Another week goes by and it’s time for another winner post!

Once again, our (not-so) high-tech drawing mechanism was used. Using folded papers with the Twitter handles in it, we put them inside the Bat Bucket again and drew 2 names.  And guess who will announce the winners today? The Batman himself (in his cartoon form, anyway). As was stated in our earlier post, one of our rescue divers is also a graphic novel afficionado, and he drew the Caped Crusader on his whiteboard announcing this week’s Twitter winners.

If you want to refresh your memory with the original post about the contest click HERE!

And so, without further ado:

Holy Bat Bucket! The first winner drawn is @bobzorin.

Wuzzaaahhh! And second winner is @angiemeeker.

Both will be able to buy a year of hosting (provided by IX Web Hosting) for $1.00. Congratulations!

Remember the contest is NOT over yet! Keep retweeting for a chance to win MORE $1 /year Hosting prizes! And if you want to see where we come up with the original Batman sound effects check this out.

Ohio Growth Summit

We’re Pumped!

What an exciting day Wednesday was . . . Social Media in real, live action! Free Hosting Rescue’s Twitter followers more than quadrupled.

Ohio Growth Summit

Ohio Growth Summit

Where were we? At the Ohio Growth Summit right here in Columbus, OH. This event was sponsored by the Ohio Small Business Development Center, located at the Columbus State Community College, and was organized by @MichaelBowers. Thanks Michael!

Jim Canterucci

Jim Canterucci

The first keynote speaker was Jim Canterucci, author of Personal Brilliance. Jim’s speech focused on achieving success, by applying four key habits (Awareness, Curiosity, Focus, and Initiative) to your life and work. Thanks Jim, very motivational!

Throughout the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon, attendees chose between several enlightening breakout sessions such as: Social media – Small Business the Social Guerrilla Marketplace, Invent, Build Go to Market, Go Global Now, and Obtaining Financing: How to Play the Game.

Chris Brogan

Chris Brogan

After lunch, additional breakout tracks included: Social Media Tools that will Mobilize Your Business Growth Strategy, From Models to Sales, Supply Chain Management, and The Banker’s Perspective. After the “Pitch It” session competition, where new starts try to promote their product in two minutes or less, it was time for the afternoon’s keynote speaker.

Chris Brogan had people on the edge of their seats with his humor and quick wit. With Chris we instantly took his message to heart, “Be Human”. Chris not only “talks the talk” (or should we say “tweets the tweet”), but more importantly, he definitely “walks the walk” when it comes to social media. Thanks Chris for knocking it out of the ballpark! Your speech made us all pre-order Trust Agents.

Second Round Winner!

It’s been a week and you’d think we would have come up with a high tech way to select today’s winners.  Well we didn’t. All the twitter handles of those who Tweeted about our contest (from previous and current periods) were printed on a piece of paper, folded, and are put inside the Bat bucket again.  (If you want to refresh your memory with the original post about the contest click HERE!)

Kapow! The first winner drawn is @1080Group.

Zzzzzwap! And second winner is @katie_mccartney.

Both will be able to buy a year of hosting (provided by IX Web Hosting) for $1.00. Congratulations!

A day like no other…

Twin Valley Horse Ranch

Twin Valley Horse Ranch

A day at Twin Valley Bed & Breakfast Horse Ranch is like no other.

http://www.geocities.com/twinvalleyhorseranch/

Welcome again to our free-hosting website showcase. This week we are featuring the Twin Valley Horse Ranch. For families, couples, friends … this place appears to be truly magical!

After a good night’s sleep in a cabin, a fully-equipped suite in the Ranch House, or one of the B&B rooms (with private bath, of course) at the Lodge . . . wake up while having coffee on the porch, gazing into the deep woods or lovely mountains and plan your day!

And what a day it can be! Maybe you will choose a morning horse ride — either a 1.5 hour or 1/2 day ride on the ranch’s miles and miles of mountain trails (real Smoky Mountain trail-riding, as easy-going or as challenging as you wish)!  Maybe the fishin’ proves too good to resist, or maybe you’ll swing from an old-fashioned rope into a deep spring-fed pond, or take the llama on his daily walk, feed the chickens, laugh at the antics of two fainting goats, or play with Ruby the official greeting dog . . . the list just goes on and on!

Better hit the sack early- tomorrow promises to be another exciting day!

So, Twin Valley Horse Ranch, if you guys are watching, please fill in your contact info in the “Get More Info” form below (bottom right), and we’ll transfer your site and host it for 1 year for $1.00!

Through The Lens Softly…

Through The Lens Softly...

Through The Lens Softly...

As my photography progressed over the years, I became more aware that the subjects that excited me the most were close-ups. Whether zeroing in on the heart of a flower, or isolating a small portion of a large hillside, my “macro eyes” loved discovering bits and pieces of the larger subject…

And the 1st Winners are…..

Our High Tech Drawing Mechanism

Our High Tech Drawing Mechanism

If you have been following Free Hosting Rescue, you know that we’ve been running a contest on Twitter. We are Tweeting to people who may be losing their free web hosting accounts and letting  them know Free Hosting Rescue is here to help. (If you need to refresh your memory with the original post about the contest click  HERE!)

The Rescue team gathered with great anticipation for the first drawing.  The Twitter handles of all those who entered were printed on a sheet of paper.  We cut them out and went looking for a hat to put them in.  Uh oh! No hat!

Not to be diverted from our mission, we went to commissioner Gordon’s office and hit the Bat beacon.  (One of our rescue divers is also a graphic novel afficionado) He happened to have a Batman collectible that would do the trick.

Bamm! The first winner drawn is @stanley2580.

Poww! And second winner is @lythandebs.

Both will be able to buy a year of hosting (provided by IX Web Hosting) for $1.00. Congratulations!
